Summer Youth Bible Study: Lesson #3

youth (1)

If you’re just now joining us, we are right in the middle of our summer youth Bible study. I’ve had a blast meeting with my eldest and her friends to study God’s Word this summer, one verse at a time.

Here’s what we’ve covered so far:

Week 1: Joshua 1:8

Week 2: 1 Peter 5:7

Here’s what you’ll need for this week’s lesson:

Supplies:

  • Bible
  • SOAP worksheet (provided)
  • Bible verse note cards (made at our first meeting)
  • “Who Do You Lean On?” Worksheet (provided)

Here’s the verse we covered this week:

Proverbs 3-5-6

To discuss the verse, we worked through The SOAP Bible study method. This method is great for digging into a single verse of scripture. (You can read more about the SOAP method here.)

Below is the worksheet we used and how we talked through Proverbs 3:5-6 using the SOAP method.

SCRIPTURE

Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight. Proverbs 3:5-6

OBSERVATION

For the observation section, we talked through this verse line by line. Here are some of the things we talked through …

Trust in the LORD with all your heart – A good picture of trust is to lean your full weight onto someone/something. We know that we can fully depend on God for anything and everything.

Lean not on your own understanding – The opposite of trusting in God is depending on yourself and your own understanding. We can learn to trust God, even when we don’t understand His plans or His ways. He is always faithful.

In all your ways submit to him – Submit means to put yourself under the authority of another. This verse teaches us to place ourselves under God’s authority in all we do.

And he will make your path straight – When we submit to and trust in God, He will lead us and show us the way to go. He can make our path clear.

APPLICATION

Before they filled out their Application section, I gave them a “Who Do You Lean On?” Worksheet. It looked like this:

You can download a copy HERE..

As we read through each scenario, I ask them, “In this situation, who do you usually lean (depend) on to help/comfort/council you?

Each of these scenarios represent an opportunity to lean on God. It’s certainly not wrong to go to your parents or friends in situations like these. Both are gifts from God and given to us for our good. However, neither can take the place of God in our lives.

When we learn to trust in God with all our heart and lean on him when we have a need, two great things happen. 1. Our faith grows.  2. We begin to see the ways that God can lead us in our day-to-day lives.

After they finished their worksheet, I asked them to write down one to two ways they can practically apply the truth of these verses in their lives today.

PRAYER

Then they took their application response and wrote it into a prayer of commitment to God.

I haven’t decided what their homework verse is going to be for next week. Any ideas of a verse that would fit into this theme of trusting in God? I’d love to hear from you!

Now go teach someone what you know. Happy Wednesday all!
