On Being Brave

“Do it!” I yelled to my blondie, little Miss, the one who bears the resemblance of her mother in more ways than one. “You can do this!”  Monkey bars are normally no match for my rough and tumble daughter, but this park and these rings are different.

“Come on!” I said, “What’s the worst thing that could happen?”

{I’m laughing, as I type this because I’m thinking of a dear friend who could easily rattle off a list of 10 things right off the bat that could happen if she fell.  I, on the other hand, tend to lean more to the “everything’s gonna be fine” mentality.}

{Oh, and by the way: she’s not crying in that picture, I promise.  She’s being dramatic and silly.}

The poor girl stood there for the longest time, staring with playful eyes at the dangling rings before her.  She wanted so badly to do it – to push off with her feet and grab the next ring – but fear held her captive.

Truth be told, I know how she feels.  I know what it’s like to want so badly to take that next step – to let go of the ring – to risk the fall. But I also know what it is to be captured by fear.

At the beginning of this year, I vowed more faith and less fear, but the courage I’m beginning to find looks much different that I thought it would.

Courage is not the absence of fear, but rather the judgment that something else is more important than fear.  -Ambrose Redmoon

The courage I’m finding is happening right in the middle of fear.
The fear is most definitely still there, I just won’t be limited by it anymore.

For me, being brave is about choosing to follow God in the next right thing {even when I’m scared to death} … and that can look different everyday.  Last week, it meant sending an email, making a phone call and putting a date on the calendar.

Life-changing big, brave things that look like normal, everyday things to you.

Which has got me wondering, what does being brave look like to you?
