A few years ago, when finances were tight, paying bills became a huge source of anxiety for me. I can feel my shoulders tighten just thinking about it. Every time I opened my computer to look at our bank account, my stomach would tie up in knots.
Would we have enough money to pay the bills?
Would there be any money left over for living?
Questions like these weighed hard on me.
Stress and anxiety were taking its toll, and I was getting sick of the control that our financial status had on me. Finally, I had enough. Whether the inflow of money changed or not, I decided that could change how the numbers (or lack thereof) were affecting me. I knew that if I changed my focus, I could change my thinking. And changed thinking would my life.
To change my focus I did one simple thing: I changed my password.
Now every time I opened our bank account, I would have to type in these words: Godisgood.
As simple as it was, this truth became my focus. Before I could look at the numbers on the screen, I first had to remind myself of truth – that God is good.
When it came time to pay the bills – God is good.
When I needed to know how much money we had left to live on – God is good.
Before I could make a large purchase – God is good.
My focus became God is good, and the truth of it changed me.
……………….
Last month, I ran across this article in Huffington Post about a guy who did the same – he used his password to change his life. This man tells the story about how the password forgive@h3r helped him to forgive his ex-wife and move on with his life. (Besides the light peppering of cuss words, the article is great.)
………………..
As a habit, I try to keep truth right out in front of me. I know all too well how quickly my mind can spin out of control if I don’t keep a tight rein on what I set my mind on. In this digital age we live in, passwords are one simple place to practice truth.
In what areas of your life you are struggling? What truth do you need to keep right out in front of you?
Bogged down with anxiety? “donotworry”
Is money tight? “Godprovides”
Battling through unforgivenss? “Forgivehim”
In need of strength and courage? “Godisable”
Want accountability for a morning quiet time? “didyouseekGodfirst”
Feeling defeated by insecurity or weakness? “Hisgraceissufficient”
Since virtually everything is attached to a password these days, the sky’s the limit. Why not try it? Change your password to remind yourself of truth, and see how God can use it to change your life.
