The truth of the words hit me as I wrote them down.
Truth based on this verse:
Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name. Psalm 100:4
Thanksgiving ushers us into the presence of God.
So gratitude, this act of naming blessings, somehow props wide open the door to heaven. To heaven come down. To Jesus.
And if that’s true, then Thanksgiving isn’t a holiday we should simply pass through. It isn’t just about turkey or football or even family around the table. This thanks-giving could actually be the beginning of something more.
Ann Voskamp says, “Eucharisteo – thanksgiving – always precedes the miracle”, and I think I see it now. This holiday, Thanksgiving, could actually have sacred work to do.
Could it be true that we may miss the miracle of Christmas if we simply eat our way through Thanksgiving? If we bypass the heart-work involved in gratitude?
If giving thanks props open the door to His presence – to God with us – then Thanksgiving is an opportunity to prepare us for Christmas. For Love come down. For Immanuel.
Yes, friends.
Let’s offer our open hands and grateful hearts to the Giver of all good things, and let this {Thanks}giving do it’s sacred work in us this year.
