For to us a child is born, To us a son is given, And the government will be on his shoulders. And He will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Isaiah 9:6
Today we will take a closer look at the third descriptive name given to the long-awaited Messiah in Isaiah’s prophecy. Here are the first two posts if you missed them:
Everlasting Father
The name Everlasting Father means “Eternal Father or Father Forever”. In his prophecy, Isaiah is not confusing Jesus (the second member of the Trinity) with God the Father. Instead, he is describing the nature of the coming Messiah as “fatherly”.
Sadly, for many this connection is difficult to make. The word father only brings feelings of abandonment, indifference or pain. Many earthly dads have failed to give their children an accurate picture of the character of our Heavenly Father. But with Jesus, it’s altogether different.
Jesus reveals to us a perfect Father, a Father that will never leave us fatherless. With a heart full of compassion, Jesus loves, leads and takes care of His own. He is faithful to guide, mighty to protect and more than able to provide for our every need. His love for us will never end.
“Everything you’ve ever dreamed a father could be—everything you’ve ever wanted from your relationship with your earthly father—Jesus is and will be for you. Your Messiah will forever be perfectly fatherly.” (David Sunday)
In Jesus, you have a perfect father forever.
Maybe this Christmas season you need to be reminded of the tender care of your Everlasting Father. A Father who feels both affection and compassion for you. A Father who will protect you, guide you and supply for your every need. His name is Jesus.
Questions to consider:
What characteristics of your earthly dad (either positive or negative) have you unknowingly attributed to our Heavenly Father?
How does the truth that Jesus reveals the true character of the Father offer a promise of hope?
Will you lean into your Everlasting Father today?
