My fingers are dying to tap away at the keyboard, as if they have something to say. I’ve decided to let them have their way. That’s your warning. I make no promise about the content of this post …
So, without further ado,
Here’s: Totally Random {and most likely anything but deep} Thoughts by Carrie
1. Books are always a good place to start. Here’s what I’m reading right now:
Hearing God: Developing a Conversational Relationship with God by Dallas Williard. I’m reading through this slowly with some friends this summer. It’s deep and very thought-provoking. I’m really liking it.
Made to Crave: Satisfying your Deepest Desire with God, Not Food by Lysa TerKeurst. I’m also reading this with a friend. Although food isn’t my current struggle, we all have something that we go to for a quick fill. This book gets to the “want to” in making healthy lifestyle changes.
Kisses from Katie: A Story of Relentless Love and Redemption by Katie Davis. While waiting for our very delayed airplane, we talked to a man in the airport who reminded me of this book. He said, “The number one thing you can do to instill Truth in your kids is to take them on a mission trip. It’s worth a whole year of Sunday school classes. If you can’t do that, at least read them this book.” So, I am. We haven’t started it yet. I’ll let you know.
Red Moon Rising: How 24-7 Prayer is Awakening a Generation by Pete Greig and Dave Roberts. A friend posted an exert out of this book on Facebook, and I knew I needed to read it. It’s the story of a 24-7 Prayer movement. I’m knee deep and challenged already.
2. This summer, I’m working on a new Bible study, The Names of God. This will be my first study to “teach” instead of write, and I’m really excited about it. Don’t get me wrong, it makes me want to barf a little too. God is definitely pushing me out of my comfort zone with this one, but I’m excited to work with Him on another study. Come to think of it: Will you be praying for me as I dig in this summer? I’m so desperate for Him in this – I can’t even tell you. Thank you, friends.
3. I’m often asked how I have time to read/study so much with three kids at home all day. I have many answers, but mostly it’s because it’s what I choose to do. We all have the same 24 hours in each day, and this is how I choose to spend many of mine. But, choosing to read or study also means I’m choosing not to do many things too. By choosing one, I’m simultaneously not choosing another. One look at my entry way right now, and you’ll see that cleaning it’s high on my list of things to do.
Why is there a sombrero in my entry way? No telling.
After child number three, I realized that I couldn’t do it all, and it was okay. So, I’m not out shopping or running errands all the time. My house isn’t very clean. I don’t spend a lot of time watching TV. I read. It’s what I choose to do.
4. Which leads me to this thought, which we’ve talked about before: “We get good at the things we practice.” Such a simple thought, but profoundly true. So many of us talk about wanting change. We want our relationships to be different. We don’t want to nag our kids or our husband anymore. We want to rest more and worry less. We want bigger faith. But what are we practicing? Because if all we do is rehearse the same kind of life, then that’s what we’ll get: the same life. But if we really want change, we’ll rehearse something different.
We get good at the things we practice.
So, what are you practicing?
Ok. That’s enough for now. It’s been fun chatting.
‘Till another time …
