My eldest turns 11 today.
11 … which is, from what I hear, the last sane year we have left with her for awhile. It’s time to batten down the hatches, friends. The pre-teen years have arrived.
So, to commence this pivotal year, we’ve decided to implement:
{Disclaimer: We do not contract our kids often; This would be our first. This contract was in no way formed out of fear or dread. To the contrary, we enter these years with nothing but excitement and anticipation. Give me a choice between a room full of babies and a room full of teenagers, and I’ll choose the teens every. single. time. My husband and I both happen to love this crazy, topsy-turvy age. But we also see this moment heavy with opportunity. This is for her and for us. To open conversation. To set down some truth. To serve as a guide and a foundation for the years to come.
The contract was written with my children alone in mind. It is light but true. It leaves room for growth and will change and adapt as we do.}
I would love this contract in paper form. Love it.

You bet! On it’s way.
this is really good! as a family, we left christianity/religion/the church about 6 years ago, jaded and a traumatized. the contract popped up on pinterest. i clicked out of curiosity and with a sense of dread, expecting a train wreck along the lines of “i’ll save myself for marriage and never experiment with boys or drugs ever which would dishonor God my family and assure a miserable life” but this is thoughtful, wise, truth-filled and very loving. made my night. though i don’t believe in the contract format, i’m bookmarking and will reformat into a love letter for our mom/daughter journal. thank you!
Thank you for your response. I’m really sorry your family has been hurt so badly by the church. I love the idea of making this into a love letter. We have a journal that we pass back and forth with our oldest, but it’s been awhile. I need to pull that back out again. 🙂 I know we don’t know each other but I hope you won’t give up on Jesus. Religion is worthless and local churches are messy, but Jesus is pretty wonderful.
Hi Carrie!
Tristan also turned 11 last October. I would love to have this contract with him. I downloaded it.
Thank you!
