The Margins of Life

Margins.

I first heard about them when I learned to write. “Never write in the margins.” My teacher would say. “Margins make your paper neat and legible. They make room for mistakes and corrections. They also allow space for your teacher to write notes that will improve your writing.”

And now – all these years later – I’m thinking about them again.

But this time I’m thinking about the margins (or lack of) in my life.

The margins of life are the spaces left empty on purpose. It’s the unfilled hours (or minutes) in the day. A life with margins has time to breathe – it has time to rest – it isn’t in a hurry – it isn’t stressed. A life with margins leaves room for God to interrupt, correct and move. It creates noiseless moments to hear, to think, and to see. It’s the space between my load and my limit.

The margin I leave is up to me. Time is my gift and I choose how to use it. Will I choose well today?

Today’s challenge: Create margin – at all costs – and protect it fiercely!
